Normally I open a folder of samples and note which ones get eliminated by the on-access scan. I can't test this tool exactly as I do regular antivirus tools. After all, the point of Power Eraser is to handle active malware infestations that your regular antivirus can't. Those scans are interesting, but using them on a system with no active malware isn't a proper test. Not surprisingly, Reputation Scan flagged every single one of them as Unknown, with an option to submit the files to Symantec for analysis. I change the filenames, append zeroes to change the file size, and tweak some non-executable bytes.

It only checks the files and folders that you give it. Note, though, that it's not a full system scan. This scan flagged 83 percent of the samples for removal. When I fed my folder of samples to the Reputation Scan, things got interesting. To my surprise, it reported "No Risks Found." I launched an Unwanted Application Scan just to see what would happen. It also provides a home for a handful of utilities that I wrote to help with testing. My standard virtual machine test system has dozens of ransomware samples on it, along with hand-modified versions of those samples. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus almost equaled Kaspersky's record, but missed by a half-point on one test. And Kaspersky Free is a full-scale antivirus, with real-time protection that's not part of Power Eraser. It's worth noting that in the latest set of tests, Kaspersky Free swept the field, with all perfect scores. The fact that Norton's aggregate lab score is a decent 8.8 of 10 possible points just has no bearing on how well Power Eraser works. No Lab Test ScoresĪll four of the independent testing labs that I follow include Norton in their testing, but what they're testing is Symantec Norton AntiVirus Basic A$39.99 Per Year at Norton Australia, not Power Eraser. You can scan the system in several ways, and you can undo the effects of the most recent fix. And that's the entirety of Norton Power Eraser.
